Ken Backes has served on the Palo Pinto County Emergency Services District #1 Board since May 2019. He also serves on the Palo Pinto County Emergency Services District #2 Board since January 2018. He served on active duty for the United States Air Force for his entire adult life prior to retiring in the grade of Colonel in May 2017. A Logistics and Training Professional in the Air Force, he served at all levels from a flight through the Joint Chiefs of Staff and commanded two squadrons, a group and a region. He served in the combat zone in Desert Storm, Operation Joint Endeavor (Bosnia), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan & Pakistan). While on active duty, he volunteered and served on a wide variety of public service activities and was a reserve police officer, emergency medical technician and a Texas Licensed Paramedic. He was a National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University researching public policy formulation and holds master’s degrees in National Security Studies from the Naval War College and Public Administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview Texas. Ken and his wife, Wren, settled in Palo Pinto County in 2017.
