There are currently 11 Volunteer Fire Departments in Palo Pinto County. These departments respond to calls for help that are usually received on 9-1-1 by the Palo Pinto Sheriff’s Office dispatchers. The closest station to the call will be alerted to respond, and will be advised of the type of emergency (fire, vehicle accident, etc.). Most of the departments are fully trained to fight grass or wildland fires and to assist with extricating patients from vehicle accidents, and can assist our medical transportation provider with tasks such as lift assistance, or setting up a Landing Zone for a helicopter. The firefighters also respond to automatic alarms and smoke detectors going off.
The money needed to provide equipment, fuel, and training comes from tax dollars. Most departments hold fund raisers to help with any additional expenses. The firefighters are usually from the part of the county they serve, and are dedicated to helping anyone, anytime.
